Miami stands in the way of UVa’s attempt to stay on its hot streak. For nearly a year, Miami has had to live with the ignominy of a 48-0 loss to Virginia in the Hurricanes’ final football game at the Orange Bowl.

Randy Shannon would like to make today’s University of Miami-Virginia game just another Atlantic Coast Conference game. But the stench of a 48-0 loss to the Cavaliers last season is hard to forget, especially when it came in the final game the Hurricanes played at the Orange Bowl.

It was an Orange Bowl finale so unfathomable that by the time the game clock ticked to 00:00 and the scoreboard read 48-0 in favor of Virginia, the largest University of Miami crowd of 2007 was so dazed and despondent it could barely boo.

This doesn’t have nearly the glamour of Wake Forest’s last trip to Dolphins Stadium. That came two seasons ago, not for a regular-season game against Miami but for the Orange Bowl clash with Louisville.

Weldon Humble and Huey Keeney, two members of Rice’s 1947 Orange Bowl championship squad, are on the ballot for the 75th Anniversary Orange Bowl all-time team, which will be selected in a vote of college football fans. Voting began on October 22, which was 75 days from the kickoff of the 75th FedEx Orange Bowl.
